ABOUT THE ITINERARY

Huvadhu to Fuvahmulah Atoll Crossing

Fuvahmulah, often referred to as “Shark Island,” is a distinctive oceanic island in the southern Maldives, surrounded by deep open water rather than a traditional atoll lagoon. The island forms part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is internationally recognised for its remarkable pelagic encounters, including tiger sharks, hammerheads, thresher sharks, and oceanic manta rays.

It is also known for its freshwater lakes, white coral beaches, and unique dark volcanic pebble shoreline.

Unusually fertile for the Maldives, Fuvahmulah is rich in tropical fruit plantations, taro fields, wetlands, and mangroves. Daily life remains closely tied to long-standing traditions of farming, fishing, herbal practices, and community customs. Visitors may experience guided shark diving, natural mud baths, and traditional cuisine such as Kattelhi Garudhiya, a regional fish broth. Archaeological remnants from the island’s pre-Islamic Buddhist period, alongside historic mosques, reflect a layered cultural heritage passed down through generations.
